Press release | UCA participates in the European BREATH project, recognized with “excellence” for its impact on respiratory health

The European BREATH project, in which the UCA has participated, has been awarded a rating of ‘excellence’ in respiratory health.

Researchers from the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy at the University of Cádiz have participated in a cooperation partnership project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, to improve the training of professionals and the quality of life of respiratory patients.

  • The Polish national agency has given an excellent rating to the project’s results, which include good practice guidelines and pioneering training in micro-credential format.

The BREATH project (A European Collaborative and Innovative Partnership to Promote Physical Activity for Patients with Chronic Respiratory Conditions), in which a team of professors from the Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy at the University of Cadiz (UCA) has actively participated, has officially come to an end. The project has come to a close with an unbeatable outcome: the Polish national agency has awarded a rating of ‘excellence’ to the implementation and results achieved during these years of work.

Under the direction of Professor Alejandro Galán Mercant at the UCA, the Cadiz team has worked closely with leading partners in Europe: the University of Opole (Poland, coordinators), the University of Zadar (Croatia), the Pixel organisation (Italy), the University of Klaipeda (Lithuania) and EIA-Atlántica (Portugal).

A multidisciplinary approach to a global challenge One of the most notable pillars of BREATH has been its distinctly multidisciplinary nature. The project has succeeded in creating a common workspace where public health agents, nurses and physiotherapists have pooled their knowledge to tackle chronic respiratory diseases. This synergy has enabled the development of tools that not only benefit the healthcare system, but also have a direct impact on academic training and patient well-being.

Tangible results: Guidelines, Website and Training During the development of the project, the consortium has generated a series of freely accessible resources aimed at students, teachers and active professionals in the health sector:

  • Web Platform (https://breath.ku.lt/): A digital resource centre that serves as a meeting and consultation point.
  • Good Practice Guides: Technical documents aimed at promoting safe and effective physical activity in patients with respiratory conditions
  • Micro-credential training: One of the most innovative achievements is the launch of a flexible training programme, available in several languages, including Spanish, designed to update the skills of professionals and students on the latest evidence on respiratory management.

By obtaining this excellent rating, the UCA Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy consolidates its position at the forefront of international research, demonstrating that European cooperation is the most solid path for improving advanced professional practice and nursing and physiotherapy research
